My areas of specialization include political philosophy and feminist philosophy, though I also have interests in ethics and international relations. My main research interest and the subject of my dissertation is the ethics of war and violence; more specifically, I focus on determining whether pacifism is a defensible position. To do so, I examine the concept of violence, making use of Marx’s notions of alienation and ideology to analyse modern manifestations of violence, particularly the violence inherent in the structure and practices of contemporary institutions tasked with controlling violence (e.g. police, military, judiciary, and the emerging security industry). It is my view that alienated violence and the frameworks that engender it pose the fundamental problem for ethics of violence debates and, as such, mark the subject matter for a new conceptualization of pacifism.
